James McCudden was an aircraft mechanic in the Royal Flying Corps when war was declared in 1914. After training as a pilot he went on to gain the Victoria Cross and a tally of 54 enemy aircraft destroyed before his death in an accident in 1918.

Like McCudden, Arthur Rhys-Davis took part in one of the most famous dogfights of WW1 shooting down the german fighter ace Werner Voss.

In this picture they are shown returning home from a patrol in their SE5A aircraft.
